1 . It was in 1984 when congress government first moved decisively to kick-start the process to build an indigenous fighter aircraft. Aeronautical Development Agency (ADA) was set up by the government to develop the fighter aircraft programme.

2. In 1986, Rs 575 crores were allocated by the then government towards funding the LCA programme.

3. Phase 1 of the project commenced in April 1993, On January 4th, 2001, the LCA (light combat aircraft) made its first flight, a milestone in the Indian aviation industry.

4. LCA was officially named “Tejas” in 2003, meaning “Radiant” in Sanskrit by the then Prime Minister of india Atal Bihari Vajpayee.

5. The LCA Tejas aircraft has a tail-less compound delta-wing configuration, which gives it high maneuverability.

6. The aircraft is being developed in single-seat fighter and twin-seat trainer variants for the Indian airforce and the Indian Navy.

7 . The LCA aircraft can travel at a maximum speed of 2,205 km/hr for FOC version and 2,000 km/hr for IOC version.

8 .The Tejas Mark IA will be equipped with an improved version of the EL/M-2052 AESA radar being developed jointly by Elta and HAL.The Mark 2 will feature an indigenously-developed AESA fire control radar named Uttam.

9 . It is considered to be the lightest multi-role supersonic fighter aircraft of its class.

10 . Through the years, DRDO has tested LCA Tejas with different kinds of weaponry. From R-73 air-to-air missile to laser guided bombs, various weapons have been successfully test fired from the TEJAS aircraft. In future, DRDO also plans test firing of the indigenous Astra missile and guns from the Tejas.

11 . While the Indian Air Force will induct Mark-I type of Tejas LCA, a demand for tejas Mark-II has already been raised, which the DRDO is working on. The Mark-II type Tejas aircraft will have a higher capacity.

12. Sri Lanka and Egypt have expressed interest in acquiring the Tejas.
